Labor Failing to Protect Territorians from Crime

July 8, 2024

Media Release from Shadow Treasurer Bill Yan MLA and Shadow Minister for Territory Families Josh Burgoyne MLA:

If four Territorians being assaulted and robbed, three being women doesn’t bring about a youth curfew what will?

Over the weekend four off duty Police officers were assaulted and robbed by what is being described as 20 male youths.

“Let’s be very clear, everyone in our community has the right to feel safe. What we have seen with a gang of youths bashing four people is beyond unacceptable,” Shadow Minister for Youth Josh Burgoyne said.

“This sort of behaviour has no place in our community and the fact that Labor continue to fail Territorians by not strengthening the laws shows they have failed.

“Curfews will become the new normal unless laws are strengthened and programs put in place to divert youth away form a life of crime and violence.

Shadow Treasurer Bill Yan said, “For 8 years Labor has done nothing and allowed this problem to escalate.

“Only the opposition have a plan to tackle youth crime, ensure young people are put into programs that reform their behaviour and ensure Labor’s revolving door of bail stops.”
