Media release from the Leader of the Opposition, Lia Finocchiaro:
Today Opposition Leader Lia Finocchiaro tabled a petition that weighed 2.2kgs, was 458 pages and had 14,908 signatures to Parliament. By the time the petition was read out, the petition had grown to over 20,000 signatures.
“Yesterday the petition ‘Justice for Declan Laverty: Action against crime in the NT’ had 14,908 signatures and today it exceeds 20,000. This rapid growth reflects the rapidly rising rates of community concern on rapidly rising rates of crime.
“Samara Laverty started the petition following the tragic killing of her son Declan, who went to work and never came home.
“Since Declan was killed in March, three other people have been killed in knife crime, countless others have been stabbed and survived.
“When 20,000 people mobilise for change you know there is overwhelming community concern.
“Natasha Fyles cannot ignore 20,000 people who want action to ‘tighten bail’.”
“Labor cannot continue to treat Territorians as fools.
“The CLP will continue to push for Bail Reform and if elected next year, will protect our community by making sure serious violent offenders start with a position of no bail.”
