Media Release from Leader of the Opposition Lia Finocchiaro, Shadow Treasurer Bill Yan and Shadow Minister for Territory Families Josh Burgoyne:
Alice Springs will receive its first ever Multicultural Centre under a $5 million plan to restore our lifestyle by the CLP.
If elected, the CLP will build a new multi-user Multicultural Centre that can be shared across the town’s multicultural groups.
“Currently, there are 26 multicultural groups in Alice Springs with more than 4500 members. However, there is no central facility where they can host large-scale functions, events and gatherings,” said Leader of the Opposition, Lia Finocchiaro.
“The new $5 million state-of-the art centre is part of our Plan to support migrants to stay in the Territory, increase liveability and grow our population.”
Shadow Minister for Territory Families, Josh Burgoyne, said the new Centre will help celebrate Alice Springs’ thriving multicultural community and anchor the next generation of Territorians.
“Alice Springs is home to many multicultural groups and by supporting 4500 Alice Springs residents to practice their culture and faith we are helping keep people in the Territory,” Mr Burgoyne said.
Shadow Treasurer, Bill Yan, said today’s announcement was a further sign of the CLP’s commitment to Alice Springs.
“We must support people to stay in Alice Springs and our Plan to reduce crime, rebuild our economy and restore our lifestyle includes retaining and attracting people to the Territory, making community infrastructure like this critical.
“Our multicultural groups in Alice Springs are proud Territorians. The CLP’s plan will allow our multicultural communities to grow and ensure their members can continue to make important social and economic contributions to Alice Springs,” Mr Yan said.
Local multicultural groups will be engaged to find a suitable location for the new centre.
